MSI 2022: Chief Analyst at G2 criticizes tournament format and comments on campaign

Directly from South Korea, Mais Esports exclusively interviewed the Chief Analyst of G2, the Portuguese Rodrigo Oliveirawho spoke about the campaign of the champion of LEC at the MSI 2022and also criticized the tournament format, which for him, has many “useless” Md1 games.

The MSI format is a joke, starting there, because putting things in perspective: Against EG, we beat them five times in a row, but we were in a situation where if we lost the last game, we could be out of it. We could go 5-1 against them, EG would pass and we wouldn’t, only then you see something is wrong.

Rodrigo says that both Valorant from Riot Games itself, as well as CS:GO, have more interesting dispute formats than MSI, which has “many useless Md1s.”

“What if these guys do something different against us? Against Buffalo, the first game, they put a Vlad bot against Ezreal, and they decided to do it against us and nobody else. This issue of Md1 is complicated, and besides being many, often the team that wins is not the best, but the one that best prepared for a single game”, he adds.

The analyst also argues that, in the end, the teams that made the playoffs were the expected T1, RNG and G2. “EG had a doubt, a PSG Talon could appear, but the expectation was themselves.”

The G2 campaign in the eyes of the Analyst

In this MSI 2022, G2 fulfilled what was expected and reached the knockout stage of the competition, but was defeated by T1 by 3×0 and said goodbye to the tournament. For Rodrigo, who joined Ocelote’s organization after a meteoric rise through EU Masters teams, G2 started well, even without counting the Group Stage.

We started well, not counting the Group Stage because we beat NA and Order, going to Hexagonal, the preparation was very good against T1 and RNG, and then we were in a very good momentum, but the meta changed a lot, the teams they adapted very well, but something happened here, that didn’t occur to us in Europe, that LeBlanc’s matchups were much easier for us, there the other mids are not so good for Vex and Lissandra.

Rodrigo explains that, in the LEC, it was relatively easy to guarantee LB early on and that Caps would carry it without problems, but the same was not repeated at MSI, in South Korea. In addition, with the defeats, G2’s confidence began to shake.

“We lost confidence in what we could play or not, and as we are in a league, with many games in a row… We are a team that pushes into strange windows, and when we don’t have confidence, that part just gets really weird. We didn’t have scrims during the tournament, you play every day and training is kind of the stage game”, he says.

“After we started to lose in the middle of the championship, even more so after we thought we had a good meta reading, it got a lot more complicated”, he adds.

Even so, Rodrigo admits that he was not surprised by the result against T1, even more so after the Korean team opened 2×0 in the Md5 series.

Even without the title, G2 is now focused on getting the spot for Worlds 2022, and for that, it must have another positive campaign in the 2nd split of the LEC. The tournament starts on the 17th of this month, and the reigning champion will make her debut against Astralis.
